eto – Childbirth Goddess

In the classical period of Greek mythology, Leto (Roman equivalent: Latona) was a childbirth goddess, who gave birth to divine twins in the human natural way. She is the mother of Artemis (Roman equivalent: Diana) and Apollo (Roman equivalent: Apoll_), Zeus (Roman equivalent: Jupiter) was their father.
Hera (Roman equivalent: Juno), jealous of her husband’s love for Leto, had refused Leto to give birth on neither the mainland nor an island. In an advanced stage of pregnancy, Leto was searching all around Hellas for a place to stay. Finally she came to Delos, the only place safe enough, because it was said to be a floating island.
Leto is illustrated with a lightning torch in her hand to indicate that sth. new is coming.
