Aphrodite – Goddess of Love, Beauty & Pleasure

Illustration in Art Nouveau style of Aphrodite (roman equivalent: Venus), the goddess with irresistible charm and grace.

There are different versions about the origins of Aphrodite. According to Hesiod, she is the daughter of Uranus, arosen from sea foam (greek = aphros). The two greek islands Cythera and Cyprus, are cult sites of the goddess and claime to be her place of birth. According to Homer’s theory, she is the daughter of Zeus, the father of the gods.

The goddess of love was married with Hephaestus (roman equivalent: Vulkan), but she was also living a lot of love adventures. Ares (roman equivalent: Mars), the god of war, was one of her lovers, Eros (roman equivalent: Amor) was their child.

She is connected with animals like dove, rabbit or swan. She is also the goddess of flowers, trees and fruits. Rose, myrtle and apple are her symbols.
