Hera – the Queen of the Gods

Hera is the wife and one of three sisters of Zeus. Hera’s (Roman equivalent: Juno) functions above all as the goddess of women and marriage. Portrayed as majestic and solemn, often enthroned, and crowned, Hera may bear a pomegranate in her hand, emblem of fertile blood and death. She is known for her jealous and vengeful nature against Zeus’ lovers and offspring, but also against mortals who cross her.
In Hellenistic imagery, Hera’s chariot is pulled by peacocks and birds.
Her archaic association is primarily with cattle, as a Cow Goddess, who was especially venerated in »cattle-rich« Euboea.
The cow, the lion and the peacock are also considered sacred to her.

Around 600 BC the Temple of Hera at Olympia was build. Today, the temple is the location at which the Olympic flame is lit.
